Carlisle is the administrative centre of Cumbria  the largest county in  North West  England.  The District Council was formed in 1974  and  includes the former county borough of  Carlisle and a rural area adjacent to the Scottish border.  It has a population of   approximately 103,300.

The city of Carlisle is an important transport  and commercial centre with factories  producing textiles and processing food. It also serves as a market for the surrounding   agricultural region, and frequent livestock auctions are held there.  Good rail, air and  motorway links have made the city a key  centre  in the development of North West  England.

The  heart of the city centre  is the  award winning  Lanes  shopping complex  opened during the 1980s  which offers  a range of well known high street names in a  modern covered setting.  Other notable developments include the Sands Leisure  Centre  and Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery.

Places of historical interest include Hadrian's Wall to the north of the city and  the  medieval Carlisle Castle. Among the principal buildings are the  Norman Cathedral and  the  Citadel Railway Station situated close to the original southern entrance to the old  city.   On the site of present-day Carlisle was the ancient Roman military outpost of  Luguvallium and the later British settlement of Caer Luel.
