When people ask you what the Labour Government has achieved since 1997 you should remind them that in the last six years Britain's economic performance and prosperity has been better than anyone could have forecast. Inflation has remained at a record low, staying close to the Government's 2½% target.

Unemployment, which dropped again last month is lower than in the USA, Germany, France and Japan for the first time in generations. And real disposal income, a most accurate measure of prosperity, is up nearly 25%. Allied with this is the record investment in the public services, especially in our schools, hospitals and the police.

This has not only resulted in extra teachers, nurses, doctors and police officers being employed but real improvements in the services themselves and increased pay reflecting the importance we give to them as opposed to the neglect they suffered under the Tories. Carlisle is most prosperous today than at any time during its 2000 year history, in stark contrast to the dark days of Thatcherism. So that is what a Labour Government, our Labour Government has done. We should be rightly proud and take every opportunity to tell people.
